The detox dilemma

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]World wide dietitians recommend and swear by the results of detox for weight loss, liver cleansing etc. Some even go as far to say that they administer the detox diets to cancer patients as well. Off late this has caught up with celebrities claiming to lose weight by following a detox diet.

However, before you start, you should know, that the claimed benefits of detox are unfounded by scientific research. Few known detox diets can be plain dangerous. Hence before anyone starts trusting all information from google, and try it on their own, I would recommend them to work with their doctors. Few things will become clearer from the experience I am going to share now.

Aditi and I decided to do a liver-gallbladder-flush detox with Epsom salt and Olive Oil. It is also supposed to flush out the gall stones. We had to consume about 60 gms of Epsom salt in 800 ml of water and approx. 175 ml of Olive oil over six doses in 16 hours. We started at 6 PM one evening and completed by 10 AM next morning. No other food can be consumed during this process.

I experienced a lot of gas and bloating the first few hours but otherwise uneventful. However, Aditi started her loose motions after the 2nd dose of Epsom salt. Epsom salt – if you don’t know and I was not prepared – tastes YUUUUUCCK. We had to go to bed after consuming approximately 125 ml of olive oil. My sleep was very disturbed and both Aditi and I were up by 4.30 ish next morning. Otherwise uneventful for me but Aditi’s loose stool continued. She threw up as well. I continued about with my day but I felt tremendous lack of energy – which is very unlike me- and I hated it. I was sweaty and lightheaded for sometime and could not keep my head up. Aditi also felt light headed. After the 2nd does of Olive oil I started having loose motions and it continued until evening. My gas and bloating continued till next day. I glued myself to bed most of the day as I was totally down on energy. Aditi took it much better than me the next day as she consciously drank water to keep herself hydrated.

Many studies show that the “gall stones” are actually the saponification of Olive Oil and Magnesium sulfate. They are not actually gall stones.

Both of us felt very light in our stomach. Ofcourse!! everything was taken out by means of induced diarrhoea. When we lose water from our body, we lose minerals and salts from our body. It puts our body in a state of salt imbalance. The feeling of growling stomach and gas is no fun to deal with. Though Aditi was better composed through the process. Dieticians who recommend Detox, believe that we pick up toxins from the air around us.

I urge you to think – how can something that puts our body in a state of salt imbalance, be beneficial to us? How does the toxin from air that we breathe in, make it’s way from the respiratory tract to the digestive tract and then cleansed by liver detox?

Among all the side effects mentioned above, also a known side effect is Arrhythmia. So older people or people with this known issue must not try this.

In my opinion the best liver detox is :

Eat freshly cooked and more natural food like fruits, nuts, vegetables, grains, pulses and meat. Avoid packaged food and drinks which are loaded with preservatives. Sleep well, Meditate, drink 2-3 litres of water and exercise every day.

and you will NEVER need any other painful liver detox
