Urinary incontinence (UI) is also known as “loss of bladder control” or “involuntary urinary leakage.” Millions of women experience it, and the frequency of UI tends to increase as you get older.
It’s often times a result of stress on the muscles that help hold urine.
Hormone changes can affect the muscle strength in the pelvic region and hence it is common in women going through menopause. Estrogen is a hormone that helps to keep the bladder healthy and function properly. As we near menopause, estrogen levels start dropping, which causes the pelvic muscles to weaken and the control over bladder reduces.
By making some lifestyle changes, we can reduce the severity of urinary incontinence:
- Avoid alcohol and coffee as this can urge us to use the restroom more often.
- Chronic constipation can affect the bladder control by weakening the pelvic floor muscles. So try eating high fibrous food, drink plenty of water and move around more to reduce constipation.
- Being overweight can put pressure on the bladder and increases urinary incontinence.
- Start pelvic floor exercises or Kegels to improve your pelvic floor muscle strength.
Try these natural remedies and try to get control over your bladder.
If you know of anyone who is having this issue, please share. Women above 40 will especially benefit from this information.
