I had chosen to have a family and a career – BOTH. So it was my responsibility to figure out how I could manage work and family while taking care of my health. If I do not have health, I will not be able to bring my 100% to family or career or to anything.
In short what I needed was – Health + Family + Career – ALL THREE. I could not compromise one for the other.
In order to balance all of these I learnt few key things about how a fitness program should be:
#1. Healthful – Whatever we do should have our long term health in mind.
I could have achieved a short term goal through Keto or Intermittent fasting or liquid diet or starvation or use of supplements, but would it promise me a long term good health?
If I exercise beyond my limit I would injure myself. If I exercise less or do the wrong kind of exercise then I will not get the right benefit.
#2. Simple – The program has to be simple so that it fits into our schedule, lifestyle and food preferences within acceptable health guardrails.
For a working woman/professional sometime it is difficult to stick to a single schedule for exercising.
People have to deal with sudden escalations at work, child or aged parents falling sick, help falling sick , a sudden whatsapp from school. These are often the causes why people miss completing their exercises. I faced this too..too many times.
So it worked best when my exercise time did not have any dependency on trainer slots or Gym hours or Gym Equipment. I would look to squeeze in 30 mins at the end of a long day to complete my exercise on these rough days.
#3. Sustainable – Once we attain a certain short term goal, the program should teach us how to sustain the result without going back to the old state.
Many times people go through weight loss programs but put back all the weight because they did not learn the tricks to sustain it. Sustaining is the easiest part if we learn the way to do it right. It needs awareness of how our body responds to different food groups and how to bring it back to the target weight if it goes a little over.
Once we are at a healthy weight range, there is so much to accomplish in life that we should not waste our time and energy on repeating a weight loss program.
Navitae programs were created with all these fundamental principles. This is how we do it:
1. Healthful : We do not recommend keto/intermittent fasting/starvation of any kind/weight loss supplements. The exercises are designed based on your fitness levels.
2. Simple :Our programs are designed according to your lifestyle, food preferences, food availability. There is flexibility with respect to exercise time. The flexibility is provided within the permissible guardrails of health – Healthy food choices and minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to high intensity exercises per week, but you can decide the hours of your exercises.
We also provide quick tricks and tips to reduce your cooking and prep time for healthy meals.
3. Sustainable – Once you attain your target weight/health, we run a 6 week program where you gain knowledge and awareness of how your body responds to different food groups. Moderation is individualistic – It’s different for different people. You will learn about your personal moderation threshold. Hence, once you graduate from the program you will be able to sustain the weight loss in any kind of situation.
We also understand that everybody is different – different genetic encoding, different underlying biochemistry, different medical conditions. Most people know what healthful choices are but struggle when it does not work for them because of these factors.
So a plan cannot be a cookie cutter plan. It needs to be “PERSONALIZED!”
4 years back when I set out on my new career choice of being a Health and Fitness coach, I designed programs where I brought in lessons learnt from my own fitness journey and academic qualifications. I went on to build programs that were – Healthful, simple, sustainable and above all Personalized.
What do you look for when selecting a fitness plan for yourself. Please do share so I can learn from you and incorporate in our programs.
